What to Keep in Mind Before a Winter Oil Change

Winter weather can be tough on your car. From your windshield wipers to your tires to your battery, you don’t want to go into the cold winter months unprepared. Engine Oil Viscosity

The “W” is for winter. The lower the W number becomes, the better the oil will perform in winter temperatures. The second number, 40, refers to the oil’s viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius. This number will also lower as viscosity lowers, meaning a thinner oil will have a lower number and a thicker oil will have a higher number. This is because, as you probably know, a thick liquid does not flow as easily in low temperatures, making thicker engine oil a poor choice for winter conditions.

The sealing rings, split clamp, and canister can all be damaged in a sudden burst of pressure, so it is important to choose the correct oil filter for your car and change it regularly. To upgrade from a standard oil filter, ask for a filter that comes equipped with a spring-loaded bypass valve. This valve will open in case you forget to change your oil for a while, creating a bypass for dirty oil so that it doesn’t cause costly damage to your engine.
